One Focused Hour

Or maybe I should ask, are you/we even capable of an hour of uninterrupted focus?  Who was it that said, “In the world of the blind, the one-eye (person) is King/Queen”.

I dare you, check out of the devices all of them for 30 minutes.  Can you?  Will you start to twitch?  How long before you’ve “just got to….” Check whatever?  All by itself there is nothing wrong with being “plugged in”.  But let me ask, have you let your connection become a compulsion?

“Thinking is hard, that’s why so few do it.”  Gold star if you know who said that.  (Here’s a hint his name is on millions of cars.)  Thinking also takes time.  I know you watched some streaming clip with the hero comes up with a master plan in a “snap”.  BS!  Thinking takes time, calm and focus.  Imagine if you will, with everyone else running one “click” to the next email what if you were the one with a daily plan.

That’s your power hour, you’d what “clicks” should “stick” and what you can “pitch”.  Imagine the clarity of NOT chasing your tail.    A single, focused hour a day can revolutionize your life. It’s not about the quantity of time, but the quality of focus.

Ways to Master the Focused Hour

  1. Choose Your Golden Hour: Start early – here is a fact the most successful go to bed early and get up early.  If you want to be successful at a very high level this is an easy way to start.  EARLY.
  2. Create a Dedicated Workspace: Just have a spot that’s yours.  Get away from the kids, the dog, the goldfish…. For 60 minutes build a wall around you.
  3. Minimize Distractions: Dah…. Turn it off.  Really will the world burn down if your off-line for an hour at 6a?  And if it does or could we need to have another conversation.
  4. Don’t Cheat: Use the full 60 minutes.  At the start this will harder.  As you get in the swing of things you’ll find you may need more time some days.  Key is no matter what use the full 60 minutes.
  5. Use Time Management Techniques: Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique (working in 25-minute intervals with short breaks) can help you stay focused and avoid burnout.  We’ll talk more about this idea in another post.
  6. Keep a Journal:  Journaling is not just for teen girls.  The very successful use notes and journals.  They are reminders, they help keep progress moving, keep details clear.  Don’t be fancy, just get a notebook of some kind and make note from your hour daily.

Less is More

It may seem counterintuitive, less can indeed be more.  By dedicating just one hour a day to focused work, you change the rules of play.  Everyone else is “click scrambling”.  You’re not fooled.  Everyone else is busy, so busy “doing”.  You have unleashed your greatest asset.  Your mind.  You have loosed your power to think and problem solve.  You’re power of forethought gives you calm.  You can anticipate challenges and be ready to meet them without “connected panic”.  Here’s my challenge:  60 days, take one hour a day in the AM to focus ON your business not be IN your business.  Write me and tell me what’s happened.  I know you’ll be amazed.  I think you’ll find as Desiderius Erasmus said you’ll soon be know as the one-eyed person leading…

Remember, it’s not about the quantity of time, but the quality of focus.
